Influence of grain size on strength of polymineralic crystalline rock: New insights from DEM grain-based modeling

چکیده

Grain size effect on rock strength is a topic of great interest in geotechnical engineering. A consensus obtained from earlier laboratory tests that generally decreases with the increase grain for both silicate and carbonate rocks; however, some recent numerical results conflict such test results. To address this intriguing issue, polymineralic crystalline low porosity investigated numerically using grain-based modeling (GBM) approach discrete element method (DEM) by interpreting micro-cracking process response to loading. In agreement previous DEM simulation results, simulated found increasing homogeneous heterogeneous models, even when number assembled disks one mineral changes. The mechanism mainly associated smooth-joint contacts along interfaces generation boundary cracks significantly weaken integrity model, which similar effects inherent defects real rock. As increases, fewer are built model becomes much higher. Hence, solely changing as observed cannot be replicated. degradation parameters used mimic possible effect. comparable those heterogeneity considered. Degradation provides plausible explanation strength.

On the effect of grain size on rock behavior under cyclic loading by distinct element method

It is well-known that the mechanical behavior of rocks under cyclic loading is much different from static loading conditions. In most constructions, the load applied to structures is within dynamic ranges. That’s why a great deal of attention has been paid towards this field in order to identify the dynamic behavior of rocks in more details. Nevertheless, the nature of dynamic failure in rocks ...

Grain size influence on the thermal properties of stabilized zirconia-nano spinel (Al2O3-MgO) composites

Abstract. Cubic crystalline oxides such as Y2O3 and MgO is used to stabalized zirconia phases at high temperature. In this paper the Y2O3 powder was added to stabilized zirconia and preparing a mixture of MgAl2O4 Spinel by mixing 1mol of nano-MgO with 1 mol of nano-Al2O3 powders. The spinel was added to the Y2O3-ZrO2 by various weight percentage (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 wt%), and after that the sp...

A Model of Dust Grain Charging: The Influence of the Grain Size

Dust grains — objects of different shapes with a size distribution from micro to nanometers — are generally considered as a part of many space as well as laboratory plasmas. Among various charging processes, electron-induced secondary emission plays an important role wherever plasma contains a noteworthy portion of hot electrons. We have developed a numerical model of charging dust grains due t...
